Pop Goes the Real Estate Bubble

"All good things must come to an end", according to an old English Proverb.  The "good thing" I'm talking about now is the Real Estate market of the US.  After phenominal growth for the past 5 years we are seeing signs that this is coming to an end.  The National Association of Home Builders reported that the growth rate of home purchases in the month of August has slowed compared to the previous month.  If this isn't enough proof, this article by Nicholas von Hoffman, a writer for "The Nation" publication is citing examples that this decline can potential yield a similar "POP" of the real estate market, much like the early 90's dot-com bust in 2000.  Like he said in the article, one quarter isn't enough to determine a trend so I'm going to sit on the side-line and watch.  If in fact we get this "POP" and massive sell-offs proliferate in the market, guess who's going to take advantage and become a 1st time home owner?  I suggest you renters out there do the same.

Good story on the Moleskine notebooks: http://www.brandchannel.com/features_profile.asp?pr_id=196

Wednesday, September 28, 2005

I'm a big sucker for word-of-mouth marketing.  This is evident by my recent obsession with the Moleskine notebooks and the Cross Ion pens.  The Moleskine notebook was mentioned on one of my favorite Podcast shows, This Week In Tech (TWIT).  It turns out this is the latest craze for geeks.  People are "hacking" their Moleskine to make it more useful (its more like tips and techniques than hacking really).  So after listening to this show, I spent most of the past 2 days gathering information on Moleskine, the hacks, and pen reviews.  I especially enjoy reading pen reviews.   Ever since I was a kid, I've been fascinated with pens and pencils.  This fascination has since been silenced when I first learned how to type on a computer.   Apparently, a cheap and great pen people have been recommending on the Internet is the Pilot G2 Gel pens.  I went to Office Depot after work on Monday and Tuesday to first look at these pens and then bought the Cross Ion.  I choose the Ion for 3 reasons; (1) its a gel pen, (2) its small and can be taken anywhere with you (I have it clipped on me right now), and (3) it came highly recommended by a co-worker of mine who loves it.  I also went to a Barnes & Noble to find the Moleskine notebook.  Its basically a simple notebook with a elastic to hold it in place.  On the inside, theres a cloth bookmark and an accordian pocket for your keepsakes.  They also come in a variety of types.  There's 2 types of notebooks (w/lines and w/o), a sketchbook, a storybook, an address book, a journal/diary, a japanese accordian album, and a date book.  They come in 3x5 or 5x8.  I bought the small 3x5 lined notebook for $10.  These things are very solid.  Good binding and good feel when you write in them.  The pages fold down so you can write without worrying about bending the book or writing on a bad crease.  I've bought 2 notebooks prior to this and both gave me a difficult time of writing because of how the book was difficult to flatten while I'm writing.  Yes, I've sold out to the hype, but I think its worth it.  Now that I'm armed w/my little book and my pen at all times, I can express myself whenever I feel the need.  Hopefully this will help me expand my creative side efficiently.

This has got to be an epidemic over there in Asia: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20050810/ap_on_re_as/skorea_game_death.  Come on people, there's more to life than video games!
